How to integrate historical pieces with the contemporary?

Oriana B, Furniture & Design Studio was established in 2019. With strong roots in vintage furniture the development of Oriana B has seen the company integrate contemporary design elements into our company’s furniture collection and interior services. Experimenting with historical motifs and forms while making designs relevant to the now is at the crux of our design ethos. We believe in contextualising vintage furniture in combination with present day furnishings; building a characteristically Polished Eclectic style.

At Oriana B, we have always believed in the journey of your home and that means that you have to find a home for pieces that have been part of your story. Sometimes that story is a gift from a relative, sometimes a find on a holiday and sometimes a lazy afternoon in your home when you fell in love whilst touring a few stores. The story is part of you and so too is the piece and so finding a special place for it in your own home is an important reminder of who you are.

This has been one of Oriana B’s founding principles and plays a large part in the company’s own story. Katharine bought her first vintage piece with a pay cheque from a summer job when she was 16. Katharine and Alannah met over a piece of vintage glass and today we still source vintage pieces for projects that we work on or for customers who need to find that special something.

Our inherent love for vintage design can be seen throughout our interior displays. Here, an amalgamation of 20th-century era design influences, tropes from European traditionalism and modern proportions come to the fore. We have an affinity for the Art Deco cultural movement along with its elaborate motifs, ornamentation, rich palettes and ethos that celebrates joyful designs. Another predominant form of thinking we embrace in our design concepts is that of Mid Century “function over form”. We want our vintage inspired functional designs to elevate the ordinary and be accessible to the public.

In the past, we have showcased original 20th Century vintage furniture and homewares design from Denmark, Sweden, Czech Republic, Italy and France carefully curated by Oriana B so that a little bit of the past could be brought to your interiors.

Why integrate vintage furniture into your home?

Including vintage furniture into your space brings new levels of depth to the texture and atmosphere of your overall lived environment. A certain vibrancy can evolve within a space from the co-existence of furniture from differing eras. With the simple use of vintage highlights a once stark contemporary look can be brought to a balanced backdrop for living. Vintage elements bring a cultural context to your home through an acknowledgement of historically significant interior design movements. With vintage furnishings you are getting well-made pieces from long lasting materials.

How to style vintage pieces cohesively with existing furniture?

This can be easily reached with the use of the 80/20 rule. With the majority of your furniture usually being of contemporary origination, the rule suggests bringing two strong vintage pieces into your room as focal points. Another way to integrate vintage into your home is by using contemporary furniture for the main body of your room and using vintage accessories in the form of rugs, vases and bell jars to develop a timeless look to your home.
