Your Sideboard Queries Answered!
Sideboards are low cabinets designed primarily as storage with a tabletop, perfect for storage and styling! They combine both practical and aesthetic appeal that offers a generous amount of storage space for any room. At Oriana B, sideboards are top of the list for storage furniture. They add elegance and functionality to your home, perfect for displaying your treasured possessions and for storing all things that you don’t need to see everyday.
Sideboards are typically long, 80cm tall and have a mix of cabinet and drawer storage. They come in all finishes from wood to metal and can have a mix of finishes like marble tops and glass doors. If there is a particular function or finish you’re looking for do not hesitate to email us at hello@orianab.com and we are happy to help.
We think that a sideboard is an excellent storage solution in any room while also giving you the chance to add some individuality to your space with unique and personal styling.
They are traditionally in places such as the dining room as they make excellent storage for tableware and glassware. They can be used for creating a lovely dining room display, being used as a surface top when serving food and placing drinks when entertaining guests and for adding personality in your décor with lamps and mirrors.
Sideboards also work well in living rooms, where they can act as TV/media units or as room dividers in large open plan spaces when placed behind a sofa.
In very large hallways they can be a better choice than a traditional console, offering more storage and a larger display.
Sideboards all come in different sizes, it just depends on what kind of style and size you would want for your space!
- Small sideboard: 80 cm to 1.1m wide.
Small sideboards are a great solution for alcoves and this size of cabinetry can make a great media unit, however we recommend leaving at least 4m between the sofa and sideboard so your TV isn’t up too high! Sideboards of this size work well in corners, however anything over 1.1m in a corner will make your space appear uneven to the eye so if you want to go longer then consider going high and adjusting your vision to a bookshelf.
- Medium sideboard: 1.2m to 1.6m wide
Medium sideboards are the most common sizes that sideboards come in. They work well in almost any room but work best in dining rooms as they are versatile and practical. Medium sideboards provide ample amount of storage with usually around 2-3 cabinets which is great to organise table and glassware.
- Large sideboard: 1.6m to 2m+ wide
Large sideboards work great in open plan space as statement pieces. They provide a sizable multi-functional storage space, a perfect opportunity to play around with styling and work excellently as a focal point for a piece of artwork. For example, styling your large sideboard with big bold lamps on both sides of the sideboard will create a show stopping display perfect for cradling beloved artwork.
- Size
You should always ensure that you’ve measured your wall correctly to make sure you choose a sideboard that will fit your space. Taking into consideration the ceiling height to make sure that you’ve enough space above your sideboard for a mirror or artwork. If you want to add a sideboard to your dining room or living room, make sure that you have appropriate depth for your sideboard so it isn’t too close to your dining table or sofa, we recommend having at least 90cm between the backs of dining chairs and sideboards and 4m between sofas and sideboards.
Small sideboards are great for tight areas like alcoves and hallways that need that extra storage bump, typically measured from 80 cm to 1.1m wide which is just perfect for those types of spaces. If you want an all round versatile sideboard for your home, then a medium sideboard is the perfect sized sideboard for you! They work well in almost every room and can be the focal point of your space. Sitting around 1.2m to 1.6m wide, medium sideboards usually have 2-3 cabinets of storage so can be a great place to store your belongings in. A large sideboard is perfect for open plan spaces, high ceilings or a period home. They are great features of the home for balancing the space with the addition of a large sideboard. They often work well in dining rooms as they perfectly balance with 2m or longer tables as they are typically measured around 1.6 to 2m+ wide.
- Functionality
Sideboards are not only stylish but functional. They have ample storage that is perfect for different spaces in your home. For example a living room is perfect for smaller sideboards as we don’t typically have masses of DVDs to store anymore but it’s a great piece to keep board games and gaming consoles. Are you constantly struggling to find a good place in your dining room to store and organise your tableware and crockery? Then a medium sideboard might be the right fit for you, it can provide a place to store your items as well being used as a table top for placing dishes and drinks when entertaining guests. Are you looking for a combination of storage and lighting functionality? Then using the storage of a sideboard teamed with the table top as a space for lamps could be the solution.
- Look
You should choose a sideboard that matches your personal taste and overall decor of your space. The classic sideboard look is a mid century piece which is normally teak or rosewood, however if you’re adding in this type of wood you have to consider the other wooden elements of your space. You should match your wooden sideboard with other woods that you already have in your room and think about whether it will clash with your floors, existing furniture or joinery. For a minimalist style space, you may want to choose a sideboard that is modern and sleek to match with the overall vibe, however it may be an opportunity to mix styles and go for something more unique and contrasting. Try avoiding having brass next to chrome when considering a sideboard with metal door handles. Choosing black metals can elevate your space as we believe that the colour black pairs well with all other metals and can create a cohesive look.
