Everything You Need to Know about TV Units
Your TV unit is a really important part of your living room! In fact, it’s the piece of furniture that you are going to look at the most . We spend lots of time watching television – to catch up on news events in the mornings and unwind
with a good Netflix show in the evening. It’s a big part of our lives so having a pleasing TV unit is really important. We have modern, contemporary and vintage
inspired tv units that will make your living space complete.
Firstly you need to know the size of your television! Remember that most televisions are sized in inches which is the diagonal corner to corner measurement but the most important measurement for sizing your tv cabinet is the width from left to right. Some popular TV sizes have the following widths:
32 inches = 75cm width
40 inches = 90cm width
55 inches = 123 cm width
60 inches = 134cm width
A really good guide to TV measurements is available from LG.
When sizing your TV unit, the most important thing is to make sure that the unit itself is wider than the television. There is nothing more offputting than watching a television that is hanging over the edge of a TV unit. We recommend that you have at least 10cm more on each side of the television to accommodate the TV comfortably. So if you have a 32 inch television, your TV unit needs to be at least 95cm – 75cm for the TV plus 10cm each side.
Styling a TV unit entirely depends on how big your television is and how much space you have available. If you have a lot of spare TV cabinet top space, then fitting a lamp on the side can a nice way of balancing out the television. If you have even more space, then a lamp both sides is a great way of neutralising the TV when it’s not on.
When space is at a premium, really the best thing to do is to keep décor to a minimum so that the tv cabinet and tv feel cohesive together. This means keeping the clutter on the open shelves to a minimum and if you have glass doors on the cabinet, making sure that’s what is inside is artfully arranged so that it doesn’t pull your eye when you are trying to relax.
This is a question we are asked constantly! Mounting your tv on the wall can be done in two ways: either you fix it to the wall in one position or you can mount it on an extendable arm. The extendable arm is great when you want to keep the TV against the wall when not watching it but angle it out so everyone can see when it’s on. It can create a really nice effect to mount your television on the wall and effectively float it over the tv cabinet. It means there is an obvious place to leave the controls when not in use and also allows you to pitch the TV at exactly the right height for your preferred viewing. But remember, it only works if you can chase the wires into the wall as having hanging wires is not very relaxing.
When buying furniture for your home, aim to create varied heights within a room. This gives visual interest and prevents your room from feeling monotonous. Your TV is one component that has more flexibility than other pieces because you can mount it on the wall or set it on a tv cabinet. Try and make sure that the top of the television is not at the same height as anything nearby for example the windowsill or the fireplace. This will be more pleasing on the eye as it acts like a skyline and the eye will travel over the pieces in the room.
